Cincopa Makes Publishing Your Videos Easy

February 9th, 2010 · Comments

One of the most challenging parts of posting on a blog or website is adding images, pictures, audio and video media.  If you are easily frustrated, you will not make it.

First, let’s talk about why you wouldn’t just use YouTube, Revver, Veoh or many of the other video sharing sites?  It is relatively easy to upload a video to any of these sites.

Then, they give you an “embed code” that you can copy and paste into your blog article.

Here’s the problem:

You will have competitor’s advertising their videos on your site.  This may be OK, but it also may not be OK if you have a sales page or you don’t want people looking around for other solutions.

If you have the video stored on your server, you have control.  For example, I had a video on Metacafe, a free video sharing site.  I didn’t notice it, but they stopped showing the video.  No notice, no reasons that I can think of, but here I am thinking everything is working, but it isn’t.

Don’t you want the power to choose whether your videos play in a multi-player, or perhaps you want to show off your pictures in an attractive way.

The bottom line is that you need to put most of your videos on your site only.  By the way, if you are concerned about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), I have had videos that I have mounted on my page show up on Google’s search page in less than 15 minutes.

Let me tell you the story of my struggle.  Perhaps it will resonate with you.

There are so many different parts you need to get to work together, if you don’t use Cincopa.

Large Files

For example, you will need storage for your large video and audio files.  Even picture files can be rather large.  Before you know it, you have used up your allowable space on your hosting site.  Now we get into the consideration of bandwidth or throughput.  Can your website store and play these large files without choking?  Probably not, if you have a great deal of website traffic.

Amazon S3

This will cause you to look at Amazon’s S3 product.  Amazon S3 was developed for software programmers to solve this problem.  They can provide gobs of storage at a very small price and their bandwidth will be more than you can possibly use.  However, if you are anything like me, you will have trouble setting up S3.  I know that I fumbled around for several hours before I even found how to upload files to the S3 site.  It was necessary to set up authentication codes - one of which is public and the other private.  There are software solutions to this problem, but they are all expensive.  Who likes expensive?

S3Fox Addon for FireFox

Luckily, I found S3Fox addon for the FireFox browser which is free software that you can use to upload and manipulate your files on Amazon’s S3 site.   It works great, but you still will have a learning curve using this software.

Video Player

You will need a good, versatile video player.   Yes, you can use the flash single video player that comes with DreamWeaver, but good luck with the html coding.     If you want a multi-player, you will have to purchase one of the good multi-players on the market.  (A multi-player is one where you show several videos.  You want your visitor to play your videos like they were in a jukebox.  The visitor can look at the title of the video and the first frame of the video and select it to play.  This can be done with pictures and audio podcasts music too. )

I was looking for a transparent video player, there is only one good one on the market.  It is Josh Anderson’s transparent player. He has made it very easy to set up. (That wasn’t aways the case.) You need some working knowledge of HTML programming to do it.  Another complication is that you will need to know how to put the video on your Wordpress blog site.   The process is quite different from putting video on a simple HTML page.

Finally, Success

I had spent many hours getting all this lined up and working.  Just about the time I got this far in my journey, I was ready to start using this S3 system along with a cool, but expensive multi-player.  (I had the player on a trial and I was pretty well set.)

Then, I stumbled across a company that made it so easy, I felt guilty.  Could Cincopa make all this pain go away?

I gave up on S3, the multi-video player and all of this.  (I didn’t cancel my S3 account because I needed to wait until I was sure that this easy way was as good as it looked.)

Once you create your account, it will look at the files on your computer and automatically upload all the pictures, videos, audio files and certain other files to your “cloud”.   (I am guessing they use Amazon’s S3) Or, if you prefer, you can just upload the files that you want to have available online.

What do you get for a small monthly payment?

  • You get simple to use video players.  They have 16:9 for HD video and 4:3 for standard formats.  Want multi-players?  They are there, too.
  • Slide shows with several pleasing rotation methods.
  • Flash Photo galleries that put the viewer in charge of what he looks at.
  • Podcast software to play one podcast or several in a podcast multi-player.
