How To Set Up Your Blog To Accept Comments Properly

Learn one way to correctly set up your WordPress blog to accept comments and eliminate spam. No special software plugins needed.

The most frustrating aspect of this issue is that when you have taken several minutes to create, what you think, is a great comment, only to find out your comment isn’t accepted. Everyone loses: Not only was your work not accepted, but the blog owner has cheated himself out of a valuable comment. Comments are so important to your blogs success.

What went wrong?

Usually, the blog owner has committed some errors in the set up. It easy to make errors because there are several check boxes that work together. Here is one suggested way to set up your blog in WordPress. I am currently using version 2.6 of WordPress, but these settings are not specific to this version. It should work with every relatively current version.

  • Comments are are wonderful addition to a blog. Making it easy for people to leave comments is indeed essential. I personally never bother to leave a comment if I have to go thru some registration process.

    Akismet has worked very well for me to catch spam. The amount of spam comments coming in to my site is sky high. Most of them are dreadfully disgusting so I am grateful akismet works so well. As you pointed out in a post a while back, akismet is not perfect and sometimes it will label a legitimate comment as spam but that has been fairly rare for me.
