Audacity - free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows

June 20th, 2008 · Comments

No kidding. This software is free.

Programs like Audacity are also called open source software, because their source code is available for anyone to study or use. (Even if you purchase Sony Vega Video 8 software, to handle the video production, you will still probably choose to use Audacity for the sound recording portion.

Sony Vega Video 8 supports sound recording and track adding and editing, but I think Audacity is a little easier to use for this sound related task.)

Here are some of the tasks you can perform with this software:
* Record live audio.
* Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
* Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
* Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
* Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
* And more!

I have found that this software is so easy to use, I don’t even have to read any of the help files. Certainly, there are special tasks that I may need to do in the future, and at that time, I will study the help files. But for now, it is as easy as cake to use.

For example, let’s say you are recording a voice-over for a video. You make a mistake, or you hesitate between points that you are trying to make. That is no problem. You just highlight the portion of the wave form were it is quiet, indicating the pause, and just delete it. The end result is that you can make a great sounding recording without the flubs and large gaps of wasted silent time.
